To celebrate this spectacular genre, we are showing one grand movie musical per month in our series Musical Mondays. To add to the drama, our cocktail specialists created unique drinks to pair with each film. Join us the first Monday each month and enjoy our specialty cocktails, along with your favorite musical classics from A STAR IS BORN to SWEENEY TODD to SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN.

Here’s an inside look into our cocktail pairings:

May 6: DREAMGIRLS, paired with Pucker Up

Celebrate Effie, Deena and Lorrel as they make their way to stardom, with this luxurious cocktail, Pucker Up. Featuring lemon-tart sparkling wine and garnished with fresh raspberries, this drink sparks the same bubbly feeling that you get when Jennifer Hudson belts “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going.”

June 3: A STAR IN BORN, paired with Stardust

Enjoy the wondrous Judy Garland perform show stopper after show stopper while sipping on our shimmering cocktail, Stardust. This sweet rush of fizzy blueberry and cooling mint leaves, this sparkling wine and gin-based beverage is the height of luxury and mystique, complimenting this musical masterpiece.

July 1: FOOTLOOSE, paired with a Campari Sunset

This rock musical is the perfect summer delight, filled with upbeat music, taboo dancing and of course Kevin Bacon. To match this light summery musical concoction, we paired this musical with our tropical cocktail, the Campari sunset. This sweet, refreshing grown-up Hawaiian punch is made with orange and Campari and sparkling wine, a perfect way to kick off your Sunday shoes and dance along to Footloose!

August 5: THE BODYGUARD, paired with Bitter Seduction

Whitney Houston stars in this musical drama about the star-crossed romance between a pop star and her bodyguard, making it a perfect match for our classic cocktail, The Bitter Seduction. This dramatic blend of vodka, orange liquor and orange bitters will put you under a spell, as Whitney Houston shares her passion through her iconic performance of “And I Will Always Love You.”

September 2: THE MUSIC MAN, paired with Taking Care of Business

Watch Professor Harold Hill con his way into the hearts of River City, Iowans as he takes care of business selling boy’s band instruments, uniforms and the think method. We paired this story of a sly dealer with our spunky cocktail for the sales person with a heart, Taking Care of Business. Hints of fresh lemon and orange juice spark inspiration and round out this dark delight made with gin, vermouth and garnished with olives.

October 7: SWEENEY TODD, paired with Pomegranate Escape

Indulge in our bloody red cocktail while watching the brutal operatic portrayal of this maniacal barber and the worst pies in London. Our signature cocktail, The Pomegranate Escape, provides an escape from this horror musical masterpiece, through its chilling mixture of sweet pomegranate, gin, a hint of lemon & simple syrup.

November 4: BYE BYE BIRDIE, paired with Rebel with a Cause

If you’re feeling sincere, bop along to these classic teenage teenybopper tunes while sipping our electrifying cocktail Rebel with a cause. Garnished with chili powder, this angsty blend of passion-fruit and tequila packs a punch more exciting that Hugo Peabody’s punch to Conrad Birdie when he gives Kim MacAfee one last kiss before going off to war.

December 2: SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, paired with a 5,6,7,8

Put on your tap dancing shoes and join us for one of the best movie musicals of all time, starring dance legend Gene Kelly. Celebrate these iconic dance numbers with a 5,6,7,8. This vibrant mixture of passion fruit punch, shaken with vanilla vodka is so sweet you’ll be doing jazz hands.

An enduring musical with an incomparable star: WEST SIDE STORY & Rita Moreno https://www.readingcinemasusblog.com/2019/03/18/an-enduring-musical-with-an-incomparable-star-west-side-story-rita-moreno/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=an-enduring-musical-with-an-incomparable-star-west-side-story-rita-moreno Mon, 18 Mar 2019 10:00:34 +0000 http://readingcinemasusblog.com/?p=207 A winner of an incredible 10 Academy Awards, WEST SIDE STORY remains one of the most influential, enduring musicals of all time. Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus? “Buoyed by Robert Wise’s dazzling direction, Leonard Bernstein’s score, and Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics, West Side Story remains perhaps the most iconic of all the Shakespeare adaptations to visit the big screen.” This Romeo and Juliet-esque tale stars Natalie Wood as Maria and Richard Beymer as Tony, and features a performance from one of the most enduring actresses of modern cinema: Rita Moreno, in her Oscar winning performance as Anita. Her Academy Awards acceptance speech may well have been the shortest in history. Take a journey back in time with this clip from her 1962 win:

Did you know that Moreno wore the very same dress to the 2018 Academy Awards?! Check out this clip from the red carpet:

Moreno, who currently wrapped her role as Lydia on Netflix’s One Day at a Time, is currently in pre-production for a remake of this classic musical, set to be directed by Steven Spielberg.
