The morning’s announcement of the 2019 Academy Award nominations showed that The Favourite is certainly a film favorite among academy voters. It is leading the way with an incredible 10 nominations, alongside Netflix’s Roma. Yorgos Lanthimos received a nod for Best Director, with each of the film’s stars – Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone – each receiving nominations as well. The film also picked up a nomination for Best Picture, as did Golden Globe winners Vice and Bohemian Rhapsody, as well as A Star is Born, Roma, Black Panther, Green Book and BlacKkKlansman.

A Star is Born was an early front-runner, having received non-stop acclaim from audiences and critics alike since its initial screenings. The musical love story received a total of 8 nominations, tied with Adam McKay’s Vice. Both films received Best Actor nominations – for Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale, respectively – and Lady Gaga received a nod for Best Actress.

Marvel’s Black Panther received an incredible 7 nominations, marking the first time that a superhero film has ever received a Oscar nomination for Best Picture.

Green Book received 5 nominations, including Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, who won the Golden Globe in that category; as well as nods for Best Picture, Best Actor – Viggo Mortensen, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing.

Golden Globe winners Glenn Close for The Wife and Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody were both nominated in their respective categories. For Close, this marks her 7th nomination, while it is a first for Malek.

Spike Lee received a Best Director nod for BlacKkKlansman, along with nominations for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor – Adam Driver, Best Film Editing and Best Original Score.

After leading the pack with 6 nominations, Vice took home a sole win for for Christian Bale’s transformative performance as Dick Cheney. Bale was the predicted winner (at least via Entertainment Weekly‘s picks), and Rotten Tomatoes says, “Christian Bale’s transformation is a sight to behold.”

The Best Actress wins went to Glenn Close for The Wife (Drama) and Olivia Colman for The Favourite (Musical/Comedy).

For Close, tonight’s Globe was her 3rd win with the Hollywood Foreign Press, and may just bring her one step closer to an Oscar win. Since the release of The Wife, critics have predicted that this may just be the role that allows Close to break through and receive a win with The Academy.

Olivia Coman, whose performance in The Favourite was heralded as “a masterpiece of madness” and “volcanically great” took home her second Golden Globe for her portrayal of Queen Anne.

The 2nd ‘Best Motion Picture’ win went to Green Book, which also took home wins for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture – Mahershala Ali, and Best Screenplay – Motion Picture. For Director/Writer Peter Farrelly, this was his first Globe win. For Ali, this marked his 2nd Golden Globe nomination and first win. He was nominated last year for his performance in Moonlight, for which he went on to win the Academy Award.

McKay received a Best Director nomination as well, alongside fellow nominees including Bradley Cooper for A Star is Born and Peter Farrelly for Green Book.

Not surprisingly, Cooper’s remake of the tragic love story, after the outpouring of critical acclaim it received, was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama, as well as nominations for its leads, Cooper and Lady Gaga.

The year’s other standout musical remake, Mary Poppins Returns, received 4 nods: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Original Score – Motion Picture, Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for its Mary (Emily Blunt), and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy (Lin Manuel Miranda).

The Favourite and Green Book both received 5 nominations including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, as well as nods for their lead actors. Green Book’s Viggo Mortenson and Mahershala Ali were nominated for their performances as a transcendent duo of two ahead-of-their-time friends in 1962 America. And The Favorite’s three female leads – Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone – all received nods (Best Actress for Colman, and Best Supporting Actress for the latter two).

The 76th annual Golden Globes will air on Janurary 6, at 8:00pm EST.
